How do you know whether someone is from generation x/y/z ??? Are there concrete birth periods that separate them?

Generations

The millenials on that table (aka us) are usually referred to as Generation Y.

I think I'll be the Millenial generation. So that means I was the youngest child ever to graduate highschool.

I read that x and y have much higher rates of volunteering for charity than the boomers ever did.

Right, x and z nothing but a bunch of slacker video playing zombies

Does no one remember the sacrifices these generations have made already in their young lives? Recessions, housing issues, education expenses, and other economic hardships coupled with the fact that many many of them are sacrificing life, limb, sanity, family, etc. to fight a war for this country... yah, they're a bunch of asshats.

I wish the majority of x/y's had the values and experiences you are referring to. Unfortunately, I don't believe that is the case. The ones who enlist are a very small percentage of the entire group. And thank goodness there are some who were raised with those values.

I'm having trouble swallowing the author's claim that the baby boomers are the entire cause of consumer overspending and consumerism. I think it transcends generations, and (as much as I hate to say it) I suspect that my generation (I just slide into the tail end of GenX) are probably more guilty of it. Most boomers are probably on the right side of home equity, while people my age bought houses at exactly at the worst possible time.

I do think that the elderly are often a tough voting block - things that need to be done, like reforming social security, don't get done because nobody wants to piss off the elderly.

And I think some of the methods the author uses to argue - like per-household spending - is disingenuous. Averages are pointless, since most of those catagories (lottery tickets, starbucks, ect) probably have a handful of very large numbers and a large number of people who spend little or nothing in that category.

I'm an X'r too, and the generation before me(boomers) was not spoiled like X,google,etc..

back then people said yes sir/maam, didn't whine when they couldn't get everything they wanted, thats because their parents would wear their azz out. nowadays parents act too much like friends to be firm.

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I think ageist comments and generalizations are no better than sexist or racist comments.

generation x - latchkey kids... Remember when the news was going off on how the latch-key thing was going to ruin the generation?

Yes, but we all grew up in hard times and yes we should not generalize.
but its still no excuse to be rude or without discipline.

According to those date ranges, I'm a boomer, and I really don't think I suck.
