Half-life 1 is 98 cents on Steam
http://store.steampowered.com/app/70/

This is an old but good game.

"Valve is now offering Half-Life for just 98¢ in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the company's debut title. Launched 10 years ago today, Half-Life was greeted with overwhelming review scores (Metacritic of 96%), earned over 50 Game of the Year Awards, and birthed a franchise with over 20 million units sold to date. The special 10 year anniversary price is available via Steam until 12:01 pm PST on November 21. For more information or to purchase Half-Life for 98¢"

NOTE: This is the regular version, not the Source version with updated graphics.

It's the non-Source version. Already have this one in my Steam Games list. Would have jumped on it if it was the Source version with the updated graphics. Seriously, why do they even bother distributing the older version with the original graphics when they have the upgraded version just as easily?

To get people to buy half life 2, it's a Intro drug.

For a buck, I'm in. Hey, how bad could it be? Thanks OP.

Half Life Source doesnt make much sense- overall regular Half Life feels better.

They only upgraded the water effects and rag doll physics for Source and left all the textures the way they are from what I understand, so you get high resolution water conflicting with the low resolution textures which looks very odd.

I remember helping my friend pick a Geforce2 card to run the original.

In for one copy!

I've played Half-Life 2, episode 1 and 2, but never the original.

No, HL:Source just updated the original game from the 1998 graphics engine to the 2004 graphics engine. Same gameplay of HL-1 but graphics of HL-2.

But yeah, 98 cents is practically free anyway.

So does this mean I can finally play the original CS on Steam if I buy HL?

haha, if you do actually still not own HL1, that means you most likely don't have orange box or left 4 dead... you would be doing yourself a favor and just going with the valve catalog for $100 there is a whole lot of gaming goodness in that deal.

No. You still need to buy CS separately.

Well, because honestly the graphics weren't upgraded that much. And there are some annoying things about the Source version. For example, you can't bhop, and the save points are different. I much prefer the original to the source upgraded one.

By the way, Left 4 Dead is awesome!

It's probably in the top 5, and definitely in the top 10 of any All Time Best PC game list.
You are going to want to pick up Blue Shift too because Barney rocks.

Probably stupid question - but does anyone know if this version comes with a key that will work for counter strike online? Thanks!

Why? Original HL will run just fine on that laptop. Bad news is he wasted $ on upgrading RAM (2 GB is plenty for VB) and the low quality LCD will most likely result in major motion blur.

If you've never played this game, you enjoy playing it and probably end up buying HL2, well worth the money. A lot has gone into these games and I steam is an awesome platform.

HL2 (Source) plays alot better online than HL1, IMHO. I would argue that single-person gameplay is better too, but maybe that's subjective since some people seem to prefer the older engine.

This is a great game - I have it for PS2, but tempted to get the computer version at this price.
