Good deal? Edit: |

Use code FATWALLET for 10% off, and live.com CashBack is currently 4.1% |
This is not an external drive, only the enclosure for one. So in addition to the VOX unit you have to load it with a drive. Not really anything special. |
Not a bad price at all for a NAS unit that can also function as a standard USB enclosure. Use code FATWALLET for 10% off, and live.com CashBack is currently 4.1% Shipping's not cheap though. |
looks like it could be a good deal for a NAS with Gigabit. Anyone have experience with this one? I couldn't find any reviews of it. |
IDE only though, would be better if it supports SATA. Still pretty decent deal, wish shipping isn't that expensive. |
$9 ground shipping kind of kills the deal. Any free shipping codes available? Was going to give this a try, because I have plenty of old drives looking for a use. Reviews anyone? |
The product page is here. Looks like a print server is also included in the features. From the mfr page, it looks like these were maybe sold as complete units and they have since had the drives pulled. The mfr specs listing also shows an SATA drive interface, not IDE. On IDE vs SATA, does it matter much for use over ethernet anyways? Edit: Well, maybe not SATA. If you download the manual it talks about how to install a drive and shows an IDE connection. The text says "Install 3.5" IDE or SATA HDD", so my guess is it comes in both configurations, and this one at the geeks is indeed IDE. |
sounds like a real NAS and not a NDAS (where you need a proprietary software on each computer you want to access this drive). can you run this as a nas and a usb drive connected to the computer at the same time? can you install an embedded version of Twonkyvision (or similar UPNP server) onto the drive to run as a standalone media server? |
Don't not what is the max drive size the bios will allow. This company always sell yesterday's technologies. |
According to this http://www.voxproducts.com/N1%20USER%20MANUAL.pdf Hard drive can only be formatted to FAT32, and NTFS format can only be used in USB interface, If hard drive is to be formatted to FAT32 format in Win2000 orWinXP, the maximum capacity You may divide hard drive into several disc caches, but as network hard drive, only the first cache So....Only fat32 for NAS use, 32g max partation 4g max file size? Dealbreaker for me. |
Actually, the partition size limit for FAT32 is 2TB, but you need a 3rd party tool to go bigger then 32GB. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314463 |
DON'T BUY IT@!!@!@! IT'S JUNK!!!!!! I found out the hard way that it does not work as it should. If you want it to be a NAS, it must be formatted in FAT32. And the real kicker is you can NOT give it your personal network name. It MUST be named WORKGROUP. I argued with the (non) support team and they admitted it was a design flaw but they refused to fix it - refund or exchange. Don't walk away, RUN #@$@$#@$#@$@#@ They also did not include drivers with it, and when I contacted them to get driver (it was not on their website), it took them two weeks just to add a link to the driver. Give me a break. The company goons are a joke. |

Forget any full-length HD titles unless you go DIVX. Also pretty much makes it worthless for full-system backups of your PC (unless you have a really lame PC) However, I find it hard to believe they would limit you to FAT32 in a box with Gbit interface |
has anyone tried to use ext2 file format for this enclosure? ext2 is a linux file system which can support files larger than 4GB (up to 16GB). |
Since it is a "Geek Special", you can't getting 10% using FATWALLET. |
