This week Target B&M has the RCA STB7766G1 digital TV converter box on sale for $44.99. This converter box appears to be the same as the Venture and Winegard models.

My other converter box is the Zenith DTT901. In comparing the two, the Zenith received two additional stations that the RCA missed, switching my very small antenna from one box to the other. The Zenith is noted at the AV Science Forum as having a high quality tuner.

One advantage to the RCA is that it uses an external power supply making it suitable for use in an RV with a 9 volt DC adapter (Winegard sells a portable battery holder for use with their otherwise identical box). The Zenith would require using an inverter.

Use a $40 NTIA coupon from here to get the $4.99 final price. Coupons take a few weeks to receive, but there will be other converter box deals in the future if you don't already have a coupon available.

Government coupon link - FYI according to the dtv2009.gov site, March 31, 2009 is the last day to request the coupons.

More importantly, does the RCA have a programmable universal remote with mute button, like a number of the other boxes? (which lets it control the TV as well)

I was thinking that I could use this converter for converting the digital signals from my cable company. From what I have read, you can't use the converter box for that purpose. If I had known that, I would have not bought the box. Hope it helps somebody else who is thinking similarly.

You don't need a converter box if you have cable-TV or Sat-TV, since both of them will send the broadcasted signal in Digital.

Correct, these converter boxes are only for people who use rabbit ears or have an antenna on their roof - or mobile applications like some have mentioned. If you have cable, nothing will change for you and you will be fine.

Sounds like a good deal, I already have a box, and still a coupon floating around, might as well cash it in before it expires. Thanks for the heads up.

To view digital signal on analog tv you will need a DCA for each TV.

They call it a dongle. Photo:

I wish you could use these boxes for cable providers, but apparently that is not the case. As cable providers will switching to a completely digital signal = No coaxial cable straight from the wall to your TV.

I assume this means if you have standard (analog) cable...cable networks probably aren't going to switch to all-digital for several years anyway. It wouldn't be wise in this kind of economy where people are more likely to cancel their cable.

freetvsign.com has Sunkey Converter boxes for free w/ free shipping. They didn't even ask me for credit card info.

To my understanding, Comcast is currently in the midst of converting to all digital around me(south florida).
