I'm looking for an external drive. Is this a hot deal? Will something be better in BF? |
.
It probably won't be more then $10-$15 = if there is one. I'm scared of them myself. I would rather settle for two 500GB. but! but! but! don't forget, with the rebate, and BILL ME LATER
|
1Tb is too big, unless you download porn 24/7. 500gb is a better size. |

They can also be useful for expanding the storage on DVRs. |
Anyone have any experience with this brand drive? And how reliable are their rebates? |
Appears to be a Western Digital Green 1TB drive inside (WD10EACS), therefore the drive is only a 5400 NOT 7200 regardless of the MFG claims, and only 16MB cache, however for external (non operating system) use that won't matter much. Yes, only 5400 -- the 1TB WD green is only 5400 RPM regardless of what you see copied and pasted on numerous sites. (The green series is 'designed to go between 5400 and 7200', but no drive shipped yet uses 7200, as 5400 uses significantly less power, and they do not vary RPM as some assume) Newegg has it for the same price, but no frree shipping. Same rebate offer, different form for Newegg. Remember Buy.com 5% coupon: http://www.buy.com/retail/coupon.asp?prid=84773074 (Not stackable with CashBack)
Warning in that thread is that they might be using refurbed drives, which explains the price level to get both USB+eSata in the case for this price with a TB drive that costs that much new alone as an internal. And a couple complaints of loss of rebate as well but no direct details, so proceed with caution! (Plus it's Buy.com which itself is questionable sometimes)

114 w/ 5% sounds pretty good to me, and I need a big drive. Tks! Green for you, and you and you and you! |

i don't know how they are now, but i've had a Fantom external drive couple years ago and it was pretty bad. Whenever i would store a video file there, it would skip when playing. even after moving it back to my internal drives did the same. I think it did something when i downloaded the video directly to that drive. I tested by downloading the same video to my internal drive and it was fine. (tested 3 files- and all turned out the same) But this is a great price... i, myself wouldn't buy it though. |
btw, Buy.com is a great company. I bought over hundred items and never had any problems. |
Thanks, OP. $114 total (well $117 because I took advantage of the $3 2-day shipping they offered at checkout) - $20 rebate. Even if the rebate doesn't come through, it's a pretty good case for $14 vs the cheapest I've seen the 1TB WD GP bare drive. If the rebate does come through, it's actually $6 less than the cheapest 1TB WD GP bare drive (assuming that is in fact what's in this case). |
