Not that great of a deal @ $1.06 per GB, I've seen this below $150 in the past.
Besides you can get the 300GB VRaptor from Amazon for $270 ($0.90 per GB): linky

Well there you have it, even more reason this deal is sour.
@ $0.79 per GB, much better

I bought one of the 150GB's in January of this year and I paid $170 for it, so a $10 decrease after 10months isn't a great deal.
WD is going to have to start dropping the prices of these 150's in order to compete with themselves on the 300's

Damn!!!And I thought I got a winner here .Anyway price/GB for me it's not such a big of a deal since I am only looking to store the OS on it.Actually I was looking for even a smaller one , like 74 or something , so I don't see the need to spend over $200 for that extra space which I don't need , at least at this point.
But you're the bosses so I have to comply.

You can never have enough storage my friend, just when you think you have enough, you run out.

Personally, I'd prefer to buy this instead of the 300. I have a 150 raptorX now and use about 20gb for Windows/Programs. I use a larger hard drive for documents. I had Vista briefly and used about 30gb. If you do not use a separate hard drive for documents, the 300 may be a better fit but if not the 150 should be plenty and you wouldn't pay for something you don't need.

No, you don't have to comply; the whole price per gigabyte thing is a lame approach. The reason for getting a Velociraptor is almost always to store the OS, for faster program and system boot times. Size is not nearly the issue for that. Hence, you're seeing people get SSD drives that are even smaller.

Thanks for the post, OP. Don't listen to the non-techies.

Wouldn't it be wiser to get a cheaper hard drive in addition to this one for extra space? For things that you need fast disk accesses for, you can put them on the faster drive. Things you're just "storing" can go on the other drive.

150GB ($160) + 500GB ($60) = 650GB ($220)

vs

300GB ($230+)

The first configuration would also likely be faster when you're doing multiple things at once, since both drives can work simultaneously and you're not waiting on a spindle to be freed up.

Hoopstick.com recently had 74GB refurb raptors for about 30 a piece.

I took the risk with refurbs and picked up 2... Connected them in RAID0 and they work absolutely fine as of now...

Cost me $.41 per GB which is way cheaper and I am running them at 20,000RPM!!!

Lame approach... do you have another approach to gauge HD prices?

Let us also take into consideration the fact that the 300GB version is FASTER then the 150GB version: http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=3291&p=7
When it comes down to it both of these drives are High-end drives, and if your going to spend big $$$ on performance you might as well get the most bang for your buck, and the extra capacity is just gravy

Not to mention; "The 2.5" form factor, low power consumption, and excellent acoustics ..."

All that said that doesn't make this deal any better even if you only "want" HALF the capacity, slower performance, worse acoustics, and more power consumption. These 150GB Raptors have been on sale for sub $150 price numerous times... so unfortunately, this not a good deal no matter how you cut it.

Seems like you are talking about the older 150gb raptors and not the 150gb velociraptor. The only difference between the 300 and 150gb velociraptors is capacity.

Can everybody please vote green and let's move on , lol.No , seriously I think only in OS terms and I only look for speed , this is not a storage drive , or it is if you're rich enough.
It was a good deal for me and I got one today.

@Rahil
I know I spotted that deal , last week or two weeks ago , I wanted to grab like 6 of them but my boss said no refurbished , even though I think it was a good deal. The only thing that scared me was the 3 months warranty.

FYI, the "raptor to store OS so you don't need big GB" is not always true. If you install and play a lot of games (which now cost you 4-8GB / game, you will be out of storage in your OS pretty soon.

You're right - this only makes sense for the OS and installed applications - So you know what your requirement as far as storage space is concerned. So it is a good pick - as far as the price its not expensive but I dont consider it a HOT DEAL

I am not a fan of refurb HDDs either but just gave it a try... 60 buck investment for 150GB at 20,000 RPM was too tempting to resist

I hope they have a reasonable life
