I say this is a way better deal than buying it from AT&T. No large rebate to have to wait for, like with LetsTalk

Awesome deal.
Alas, we cannot escape the data plan. Any ideas to avoid it? Can we have the data plan for a month and then cancel?

This is much better than the ATT deal that I had posted...I didn't upgrade thru ATT waiting for the Amazon deal and Alas, here it is....

Green for you OP!

You can cancel the data plan after 181 days, if I'm correct, once Amazon gets their commission from AT&T.

4-6 weeks is usually Amazon estimate when they're unsure of when they'll get an item in stock, could be days, could be 4-6 weeks. I'm sure it's more the former than the later.

Yeah, I would like to know how I can avoid the Data Plan with this deal also. I want the phone, but don't want the Data Plan.

When I called AT&T directly about this phone, they told me the data plan was not mandatory, and that I could get the phone with my normal family plan without the data plan if I wanted to. Maybe Amazon makes you as part of this promo? Or maybe the CSR I talked to didn't know what she was talking about - she did have a hard time finding the phone info since it was brand new at the time of my call...

I was told the same thing in a retail store. I can cancle the data plan after 6 months if I want to receive the rebate.

if so, we will end up with 175+30*6=355 for the phone (not include tax and fee)

Your math is a bit off. You forgot about the $25 rebate. So it'll be 175+(6*30)-25=330

If you buy it from ATT, you won't need a data plan, but you'll pay $350 - $50 rebate, that's 300.

If you buy it from anyone other than ATT, you will probably require a data plan.

I'm going out on the limb on this statement but I think most people who purchase these type of phones will be using the data.

Thanks for the info...

Renewal means contract extension. When you go to the link on the right side you will see an option labeled "Contract Extension (Existing Customer)" that you can select. You have to be out of contract with AT&T or 2 months before your contract expires to get the renewal.

BTW the phone shows in-stock for me now. I went ahead and ordered it last night and with the free two-day shipping my estimated delivery date is November 26.

But the renewal doesn't seems to give me an option to keep my number. It seems to want to add line to my account. Anyway how to renew and keep the number?

Let me aid you a bit here before people start blasting you with reds...

When you renew your line, you simply add more years to your contract while automatically keeping your number and your account the same. Everything stays the same. That's it. There will not be an option to keep your number because it is implied when you "renew" your old account.

To be able to get the advertised price, you need to re-up for two more years, which is what OP calls "renewal".

Almost...here's the fine print on contract extension, which by the way, does not include family/shared minutes plans:

To qualify for a phone upgrade and single-line contract extension (family plans are not eligible for contract extensions):

1. You must be month-to-month in your existing contract with this carrier, or you must be at least 10 months into your 12-month contract or 22 months into your 24-month contract.
2. Your account must be in good financial standing and without late fees.
3. You agree to extend your contract 24 months from the end of your existing contract.
4. You are not attempting to upgrade a family plan. Amazon.com cannot provide extensions on family plans.

Note: Final upgrade approval is determined by the carrier based on a number of conditions, such as usage history, payment record, and previous phone replacement.

I have a premier account and was able to get the upgrade; same plan as before. Used BML too so $10 off. $165 shipped to CA.
