Would it not be better to have a DVD/DIVX player with
Upconversion = such as the Philips DVP5982?

It's also cheaper.

Nice work OP

This is better than a player. I will play .iso images of DVDs, Divx/Xvid, even .mkv (that's high-def). Plus it has HDMI out, and has two USB ports for two drives.

I got mine at BB, and love it so far.

Does the device support RMVB file or avi file?

yes it supports AVI files, aka divx, xvid. However your RMVB files need to stay on your pentium III pc.

Nice box, but why on earth they didn't include a network port! would have been much better to stream from my NAS than having to have a dedicated external drive for it. And USB? at least add eSATA...

I've already bought one of these players (still waiting for it to come in) The reviews are unreal (see youtube) A DVD player that plays DIVX can't come close to this because it supports all these formats:

MPEG 1/2/4, WMV9, AVI (MPEG4,Xvid, AVC), H.264, MKV, MOV (MPEG4, H264), JPEG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, PNG
MP3, WMA, OGG, WAV/PCM/LPCM, AAC, FLAC, Dolby Digital, AIF/AIFF, MKA, VOB (VIDEO_TS)

playlist support: (PLS, M3U, WPL)
Subtitle support: SRT (UTF-8), and DVD subtitle.. no IDX/SUB/subtitles encoded into mkvs support
MPEG 2/4, H.264 and WMV9 supports up to 1920x1080p 24 fps, 1920x1080i 30 fps, 1280x720p 60 fps resolution.
An audio receiver is required for surround sound output. AAC/AC3 decodes in 2 channel output only.
JPEG only supports compressed RGB format files.
BMP only supports uncompressed files.
TIFF only supports single layer files.

In addition to being able to move with the times with a upgradable firmware.

As far as networking or lack thereof, I plan on trying a USB to ethernet adapter for kicks and giggles even though I doubt it will work, but plan "B" would be to purchase an enclosure from Newegg that has an ethernet port on it like this !

If you're looking for a device just like this... but with a network jack and internal storage, check out Popcorn Hour. It's twice as much, but arguably worth the cost.

For $100, the Western Digital is awesome. I have one and it's a great media player and is small enough to take on business trips to watch movies on.

NAS with MediaCenter and/or Popcorn hour will consume more power than the WD with usb drive.

Both have their place and benefits. Not everyone needs or wants a network port.

A friend of mine has one and is displeased by the unresponsiveness of the picture viewer. He says that he can't race through the photos on his screen with the remote as quickly as he would like ... anyone have anything to say about this. (still waiting on mine to come in)

Thanks for the link. Have you used this enclosure with the WD TV HD? Does it work with NTFS. I'm assuming since you plug the unit directly into the USB the WD unit would have no issue reading or writing to the drive and that the software is only for PC's to access the drive over the network, correct?

Can I copy movies to a 8Gb flash drive, and
then play/plug to the WD TV HD?

Yes indeed. As posted in the OP's original BB thread we have one of these strapped to the back of a Sharp LCD in our lobby doing exactly what your are asking. Just be sure your flash drive has adequate read speed for playback
