Old news - this has been in effect since August. |
Hmmm.. indeed, it's a repost... But the original one being in OffTopic section, my search did not yield anything... Anyhow, this was news for me... Hope some other fellow FWers benefit from it!! |
This has been going on for quite awhile.... A couple of things I noticed at Safeway, maybe your experiences are different. In order to get that gas rebate you pay "through the nose" for your grocerys. I've been price comparing for awhile and found that I was spending toward 20% more on my grocerys in order to save 10 cents a gallon for gas. Since it takes about 24 gallons of gass to fill my tank, I was saving about $2.40 a tank fill up. But I was spending tons more in grocerys to get that savings. Maybe everyone else has a different experience, just wanted to share mine.. |
Here in TX it is Tom Thumb and the groceries are higher priced--you have to shop sale items only and use coupons for it to be worth while. Also, under their old program I had a few discounts saved up and when they started the new one they got wiped out--the new one also lists 4 dates that they clear the discounts out and start over again during the year. Kroger has a discount gas program, $100 gets you 10 cents discount. Costco is generally cheaper even with the discounts. |
I noticed the same thing about Safeway's prices being higher lately since the promotion changed (slightly.. around here it was .10 off per gallon per fill-up, so spend $300 get .10 off your next three fill-ups.. whereas this one seems to add to it.. spend $300 and get .30 off your next fill-up) .. I tried to do normal shopping there and the prices were just a little bloated. Sooo I stick to shopping their big sale loss leaders only, and if I make it to $100 great, if not no biggie.. besides, chances are their gas price, even after the .10 off is still just even or a penny or two higher than the ARCO or QT prices. The way to make out on this deal.. assuming I'm reading things right.. is if you know you're going to be buying a $1000 television at Best Buy, buy a gift card in that amount at Safeway, which should give you a buck a gallon off your next fill-up.. again, assuming I'm reading it right. |
Got $1.40 off per gallon today after buying $700 in gift cards with a 5% rewards credit card. As mentioned in the archived thread, the gas discounts now stack, and gift cards apply. Furthermore, Safeway is currently (I think through end of year) running a promotion where more than 300 gift cards get double points - so $700 spend = 1400 points = $1.40 off per gallon of gas. used strategically: $1000 in gift cards with a 5% off card = $50 back Total $110 savings, more than 10%. I was buying the gift cards (to Target) anyway... so worked out well. |
I have a tons of discounts but we don't have a safeway gas station. Oh well. |

In Houston, we have Randall's, but they look exactly like Tom Thumbs (at least on the outside) and both are owned by Safeway. I find Randall's to be very high priced, better deals are to be had if you can drive to a different store. Sure, it feels good to save a 30 or 40 cents per gallon on gas, but you can probably save a lot more by going to HEB or even Kroger. |
Safeway is our only grocery store besides a local one. |
