The time is near. This game is something wonderful!! Buy.com lists release as 9-16-08, but i think official release is the 18th. The NDA has been lifted for beta testers (which I am)
The Collector's edition sold out a month ago. This MMO is going to rock the world. It's by Mythic, who did DAOC (Dark Age of Camelot- which was awesome till the expansion imho). The pvp is simply incredible, aweosme, adrenaline pumpin super funtime. Makes WoW pvp feel like tic tac toe imho. The classes feel well thought out and complete, with lots of abilities. I think its the best mmo I've played.

I've been waiting to try out this game after I got bored of Age of Conan, so hopefully they'll have a short open beta or trial period so that I can decide whether or not I want to give the game a go without dropping another $50 on a MMO.

I played beta Conan too. Never considered pre-ordering that game.

Age of Conan sucked. End game is missing and everyone who tried it is now crippled by the ongoing nerfs. Screw them get a real game.

How does PvP compare? Is it more Emain-like or Keep siege? Small group or zerg? How easy is it to get into the WH lore? How's PvE like? That wasn't exactly the strong point of DAoC.

The end game is missing in most MMO's when it comes out. It's almost to be expected at this point seeing that investors just won't give the studios enough time to work all the kinks out and finish everything up.

There's really no reason to buy an MMO until it's been out for about 3 months. I give credit to Mythic, though. DAoC was a solid launch.

The lore is awesome, based on years of tabletop gameplay of the well developed Warhammer tabletop game by Games Workshop. PVE that I played was fun - by that I mean questing and PQ'ing. Public Quests- aka PQ's (ya, just be in the area, and you are a part and may get loot) are awesome, the loot system they use for PQ's is innovative.
There is keeps/siege, , pvp areas on world map, main cities, and what seems like a queue-able scenario for each of the 4 tier, and each starting zone. So 3 queueable tier 1 scenarios, I think 3 tier two scenarios, and NDA still applies to some of the beta testing, so I'll stop there.

There is lots more to read REVIEW so far

Is it just me, or are these pre-order in-game gifts getting a little ridiculous?

DAoC was from the era prior to Mythic being acquired by EA. From first hand knowledge of some of the changes in staff and operation, it's not quite the same company so I don't think that's much of an indication on whether WAR will have an equally successful one. It could still have been rushed to market by financial pressure from EA.

And even then, back at launch, DAoC had very little content for 40+. Testing in that end game part had also been very limited especially in larger scale battles. So still the usual caution sounds like good advice. Especially in PvP-based game were balance between classes is so important to gameplay.

As far as in-game pre-order items, they'll be irrelevant for where it counts (PvP) or high-end PvE so they can throw a lot of goodies for pre-orders. And they kinda have to considering the more cautious attitude of people towards new MMOs.

Anyway, thanks for the review.

Don't read my review, read the linked one in OP

This game has been in making for 3 years, but EA just recently acquired Mythic, but they are not EA-Mythic, they are Mythic, and Mark Jacobs still has control over this project. It even got pushed back to get it more polished and balanced.
In fact, it is this game that has changed my view of EA. They truly are letting Mythic act like a city-state studio, which is not characteristic of EA under previous CEO's.

Also GameStop.com has it for 49.99 but with free overnight shipping when you use the code WAR. The only things quicker would be direct2drive and instore pickup.

This game is awesome. Great for PvP and many classes to choose from. Each class fits its role and you need teamwork to win whether in PVP or when you want to take over the enemy's fortress.
