Request iphone lovers, AT&T bashers, to please move on....

But those who can swallow a 2 year contract, and consider a cool phone for 1 cent with mostly 'iphone like' features, with decent reviews, read on..

Apple fans claim that this is not an iphone killer..maybe not. But for 1 cent I think it is good bang for the buck. Ya, I know, the 2 year contract sucks. But then, I could check out (actually renew my existing contract) without subscribing to any data or media plans, which I found mandatory with wirefly, which also has it for free.

They may yet cancel the order, but I thought to share with the community, in case Amazon changes the terms of purchase soon. So please take this up accordingly.

**Edit** Got confirmation from Amazon that ATT has accepted the renewal. (without media/data/tv plans).

Thanks. Actually if anyone benefited, this post served the purpose. The greens tell me that some people out there did.

Also comes with a $25 napster gift card.

I read some where else that phones purchased from Amazon.com don't have the "full" AT&T warranty. Is that true?

Does LetTalks.com have similar issue?

Thanks.

To be honest with you Ming, I'm not sure. Hopefully someone can come along and answer that question.
But on the sales page I did see:

"New (non-refurbished), with manufacturer's warranty"

LetsTalk requires you to subscribe to Mobile TV for $30 per month. (You cannot *unselect* this option in your cart). Amazon seems like the best option at this moment if you have to get this particular phone. Green for you, OP.

shoot. I just bought the LG Vu 915 last week. I'm actually waiting for it to arrive (expected tomorrow). I bought it from Amazon. Can I refuse shipment, return that, and then get this one? I swallowed the additional 2 year contract since I don't think I'd change carriers anyway anytime soon. Has my contract extension already started after I bought the phone, or is it after I put my sim card on the new phone, which means if I refuse shipment, would that be considered an early termination?

Should I even bother anyhow? I read that the only difference between the 915 and 920 is the ability to play videos on demand, and you do need to subscribe to Mobile TV for that. I am not planning to.

AT&T has a 3-day grace period within which you can get your activation fee back. Also, there's no early termination fee if you cancel within 30 days after activating service. AFAIK, the service starts on the day you activate the phone. See this for details.

As for Mobile TV, it seems to me that you do *not* need to subscribe to that if you buy a 920 at Amazon.

Thanks!... but I think you do need to subscribe to access the video contents available. You can play videos even on the 915, but you need Mobile TV to watch full length programs available. Or am I understanding it incorrectly?

The 915 is a crippled 920, basically. It does not have access to the Mobile TV features.
You can still play the internet-based CV (Cellular Video).

I don't see any reason at all to ever get a 915. Even if you aren't going to use the TV feature (for now), you may change your mind. Since they're the same cost, you're also really hurting the resale value.

I got a Vu not long ago for a pretty good deal since I upgraded a plan, added a line, and signed up for u-verse all at the same time. I ended up taking the Vu back less than a week later. It just wasn't.... quite.... there for me yet. I'd prefer to wait just a little while longer to see what's around the corner. It wasn't worth throwing-away my upgrade eligibility or non-contract status. I would encourage you to try it out and decide yourself.

Good luck!

I had returned the LG shine some time back, since it did not wok out for me. AT&T returned me the renewal fee and the cost of the phone without hassle. Amazon has confirmed that ATT has approved the connection (without any additional data/ video plan). Will check this out if it works for me or not. Else simply return it within the 30 day trial period for full refund.

Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't allow renewal of family plan.. I would love to jump on this otherwise

Well, I have an additional phone already with my existing plan for 9.99. ATT said I could upgrade any of them without affecting my existing plan...Did you check with ATT?

just beware getting phones that has an equipment discount on them. after some research, i found that some people on Amazon were charged $250 for their free phone because they added their corporate (or employee) discount to their plan after buying it from Amazon...since it was some type of breach of Amazon's discount requirement. one term of this equipment discount was to not change the plan to a lower priced plan (which is the case after the employee discount).

Dumb question (maybe), but I just don't know why!!
Why does Amazon ask me for my zipcode - and then states "not available for this area"? TracPhone deals sometimes do the same thing. Are there 'territorial' areas where some phones work and other models don't?

Any thoughts would be appreciated on this otherwise apparent hot deal.

EDIT UPDATE:
hummmmm.. may have found my own answer in this thread (thanks FW community!)

Text

RECAP:
Tracfone often offers particular phones or bundles to only certain market areas. It is very common to see a bundle offered in one zip code and not in another. This does not mean you cannot obtain this offer outside that market area. (See detailed info below)
If you enter a zip code and want to know what market area you are in, look at the url in the address bar.
You can see the "Market= " as part of the address.

http://www.tracfone-orders.com/bpdirect/tracfone/Start.do?action=view&market=GSM4........
This tells you what market area the zip code you entered is in.

GSM4 =AT&T, GSM5 =T-Mobile, GSM5AT =T-Mobile & AT&T
CO =CDMA, COGSM4 =CDMA & AT&T, COGSM5 =CDMA & T-Mobile

Tracfone's phones work on two different technologies. CDMA & GSM. CDMA phones do not have sim cards. GSM phones use sim cards. If you are familiar with cell phones, you know it is not that simple. If you are not familiar, that is all you need to know at this point. Tracfone's CDMA service providers are Verizon, Alltel & USCellular. Their GSM providers are AT&T & T-Mobile.

CDMA phones are much more flexible than GSM because all you have to do is enter several strings of codes into a CDMA phone to reprogram it for use with another Tracfone CDMA carrier or to change the phone number.

GSM phones need the appropriate sim card for the GSM provider in the area where the phone will be used. Sim cards can be identified by a carrier designation code on the sim card itself. TFSIMC4 or TF64SIMC4 designate AT&T, TFSIMT5 designate T-Mobile. If you want to change the phone number of a GSM phone you will need a new sim card in order to do so.

TRACFONE® provides nationwide prepaid wireless service. They use the nation's leading cellular providers to create a national footprint covering 99% of the U.S. population. This gives you service everywhere cellular service is available. You can use your TRACFONE across the U.S. and if you move, you can relocate your wireless number with just a phone call.

Most of the major cellular providers, AT&T, Verizon & T-Mobile, have a different service area for their prepaid customers versus their contract customers. Their prepaid service areas can be much smaller and can also have other limits. This is not the case with Tracfone. You get the same service areas and service levels with these carriers that their contract customers get, not the limits of their prepaid service. This means you get better service from the same carrier than their own prepaid customers.

Tracfone may not offer CDMA phones in your area, but that does not mean you cannot use a CDMA phone there. They always get a better rate from GSM providers and therefore would prefer that you use a GSM phone in any area that has full GSM coverage available, even if a CDMA provider is available there also. There are times when there may not be phone numbers available from the GSM carrier because of so many users in the area. I have not had that problem with CDMA.

Be sure to confirm that the phone will work in your zip code prior to purchase.
There is plenty of help on this forum if you ask. It is always quicker and easier if you can provide the zip code when you inquire about phones or service for your area.

Does anyone know how to add an unlimited family messaging plan using Amazon? I don't see the option, but I do with LetsTalk.com
