AT&T Wireless now offers its Unlimited Data Plan for its GoPhone Pay-As-You-Go Cell Phones for $19.99 per month. (Click "Pick Your Plan Deals"; this price will show as you build your plan.)

Savvy users can now, with minor changes, use any unlocked GSM or UMTS phone, smartphone (including iPhone), PDA, or aircard as a data device… without paying any monthly voice fee. iPhone users can bypass the $50 GoPhone plan. existing GoPhone Pick Your Plan customers can switch to Pay As You Go service and also benefit from the new offering. Simply call AT&T Customer Service to switch your account over. (credit to phonenews for this info) Previously, GoPhone Pay As You Go offered feature packs, which allowed for adding 1 MB or 5 MB of data for $4.99 and $9.99, respectively. When the data was used up, a customer could call back to 611 and re-add the data package. Unused data would roll over from month to month, provided the customer re-purchased the add-on. Now AT&T has added to that offering with a new package: Unlimited MEdia Net for Pay As You Go plans. For $19.99/month (same as Unlimited MEdia Net on other plans), customers can use MEdia Net service without paying any monthly airtime charge. All a customer has to do, is call 611 at the start of every month to have the automated system re-add the Feature Pack to the account.

Warm at best. While unlimited mediaNet (or whatever it's called) at $20 per month/no contract is ok, this would certainly be a hot deal of unlimited text was included.

I guess with the right phone, one could get the most of the current offering. Tether????

What is the easier way for new customer to get this? I want to use it with my Iphone.

Thanks

Think things through! You can use the SIM with unlimited 3G data in an aircard(used, e-bay) etc., that's what makes this a great deal. You can even sign up with at&t, cancel, pay the EFT, and keep the card.

I don't know how it works for Prepaid.. but if we tether thru a smartphone plan, they'll most like catch you in the first attempt itself.. and you'll see a huge bill charged at the pay per kb rate..

somewhere in the fine print should be the wordings that tethering is not allowed.. and it's pretty easy to track that.. just letting people know that this could happen, before you jump on the deal with the sole intention of tethering...

Again not true! At&t allowed tethering(sort of, users do it all the time)( don't confuse PPU with a feature or bolt on) and at&t can't bill you as there is no contract. At best they can just shut you off.

How do you bypass having to pay the min $29.99 a month plan?

to clear the confusion; in order to use this with your smartphone; you will need a sim card from at&t prepaid phone, and an unlocked smartphone. take the sim card out of the prepaid phone and stick it into the unlocked smartphone.

Pretty sure data plans look at the IMEI along with the SIM card.
That's what I seem to remember when talking with one of their
rare, smart techs.

Add mobile Skype and you have data and VOIP.

I am still confused about how to get around the 29.99 monthly voice plan? Also does anyone have experience with tethering on AT&T. Do they block it?

What would be nice is a data card one could change the imei number on. Although I don't think that's legal.

It seems good to me. I would like to use the 3G service from ATT but I don't want to change my service provider (from TMO for voice). I am going to try the unlimited data for prepaid (and will be using the prepaid sim in my unlocked [i guess it does not matter now] ATT Tilt), especially it does not require a contract.

Thanks OP

It doesn't look like you can bypass the min $29.99 monthly fee. $19.99 Unlimited is for "Pick Your Plan" prepaid plans, it is not available for "Pay As You Go" prepaid plans.

For "Pay As You Go" prepaid plans, you can purchase "Media Net Package" by calling 611 from your cell phone or 1-800-901-9878 from other phones. There are two different media net packages - $4.99 for 1 MB or $9.99 for 5 MB. It's good for 30 days. If you purchase another package before existing package expires, remaining data balance will be carried over to the next 30 days.

I have been getting 5 MB packages for months. 5 MB seems little but I never used them up. I use ActiveSync to sync with Exchange Server. Exchange push email technology is very "frugal", it uses very little data bandwidth. If you don't have access to Exchange Servers, you can check out free services offered by mobipush or mail2web.

For internet browsing, I use Opera Mini which is also very frugal and uses very little bandwidth.

Edit : I was wrong. I just called 611 and "unlimited media net" is available to "Pay As You Go" for $19.99 (30 days).

You can use the unlimited media net package with pay as you go. I just added it to my plan. I have never had the pick your plan package. I am now getting unlimited usage for $20 a month. I really like that I can add it only when I need it. I only need it a few times a year when I travel. The other months I dont want to have to pay for it. Since I have wifi on my phone.

I do know for a fact that this Unlimited Media Net plan does work. 2 weeks ago i took my old unlocked Nokia 6230 to a ATT corporate store and signed up for their prepaid plan for $4.99, once i done that i simply called 611 and added the Unlimited Media Net for $19.99/month and while on vacation last week used it as a modem for tethering on my laptop and used it every day for about 7 days, i was getting right at 460.8 kpbs so not to terribly slow using it as a modem.
Thanks

Funny to see some people still depend on wifi... I have 800Kbps - 1.2Mbps everywhere I go, get sero while you can
