Just spoke to Costco and yes you can use these cards to renew your membership.

this is fraudulent. they make you give a lot of info and waste a lot of time to sign up, and THEN tell you they are out of stock! i don't appreciate it at all.

Not sure what you are doing, but I see OOS right away. If you are just registering for MCR, you wouldn't be able to have the points for 16 weeks anyway. Nothing fraudulent...
